Oscars voting begins on Monday, Dec. 17, for Academy members. They have until Thursday, Jan. 3. Members have until today, Dec. 14, to request a paper ballot to vote for next year's Oscars — the original deadline was Nov. 30.
This is the first year for e-voting. The majority of voters have already registered online, according to the Academy. Those who have not may still register through Jan. 2, 2013.
According to Academy rules, feature-length films "must open in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County by midnight, Dec. 31, and begin a minimum run of seven consecutive days" to be eligible for Best Picture at the Oscars.
A feature-length motion picture, as defined by the Academy, must be longer than 40 minutes and be exhibited theatrically on 35mm or 70mm film, or "in a qualifying digital format."
"Feature films that receive their first public exhibition or distribution in any manner other than as a theatrical motion picture release are not eligible for Academy Awards in any category."
We are 27 days away from the 85th Academy Awards nominations announcement, which will be announced live on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at 5:35 a.m. PT.
The 85th Academy Awards, for outstanding film achievements of 2012, will be presented on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and will be televised live on ABC and in more than 225 countries worldwide.
