Oscars 2015: 323 films eligible for Best Picture

Ahead of the start of voting on Dec. 29, there are more than 300 feature films that have made the cut to contend for Best Picture at the 87th Academy Awards, according to a reminder list posted on the Academy's website.

Ahead of the start of voting on Dec. 29, there are 323 feature films that have made the cut to contend for Best Picture at the 87th Academy Awards, according to a reminder list posted this week on the Academy's website. The Academy confirmed this Friday.

The number of eligible films is up from the previous four years. There were 289 features last year, along with 282, 265 and 248 eligible Best Picture contenders for 2012, 2011 and 2010, respectively.

Oscars voting begins on Monday, Dec. 29, for Academy members. They have until Thursday, Jan. 8.

This is the third year e-voting.

According to Academy rules, feature-length films must open "for paid admission in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County" by midnight, Dec. 31, and begin a minimum run of seven consecutive days to be eligible for Best Picture at the Oscars.

A feature-length motion picture, as defined by the Academy, must be longer than 40 minutes and be exhibited theatrically on 35mm or 70mm film, or in a qualifying "Digital Cinema format."

"Films that, in any version, receive their first public exhibition or distribution in any manner other than as a theatrical motion picture release will not be eligible for Academy Awards in any category."

We are less than 35 days away from the 87th Academy Awards nominations announcement on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015, at 5:35 a.m. PT.

The 87th Academy Awards, for outstanding film achievements of 2014, will be presented on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and will be televised live on ABC and in more than 225 countries worldwide.
