The Academy defines an animated feature film as "a motion picture with a running time of more than 40 minutes, in which movement and characters’ performances are created using a frame-by-frame technique. Motion capture by itself is not an animation technique. In addition, a significant number of the major characters must be animated, and animation must figure in no less than 75 percent of the picture’s running time."
In order to be eligible for nomination, the film must fulfill required Los Angeles qualifying runs, theatrical release requirements and "comply with all of the category's other qualifying rules before they can advance in the voting process."
If at least 16 or more of the films listed above are eligible, the category may have up to five nominees, per Academy rules. The Animated Feature Film Award Reviewing Committee "will view all submitted eligible films and assign each film a score of 10, 9, 8, 7 or 6, with the guidelines of 10 (excellent), 8 (good), 7 (fair) or 6 (poor). Those films receiving an average score of 7.5 or more shall be eligible for nomination."
For the Animated Feature category to be "activated," at least eight eligible animated features must be theatrically released in Los Angeles County within the calendar year. Films submitted for the category may also qualify for Academy Awards in other categories, including Best Picture, provided they meet the requirements for those categories.
