Academy invites 842 from 59 countries to join its ranks

The Academy continues to diversify and globalize its members with a group of 842 artists and executives from 59 countries being invited to join its exclusive ranks on July 1, 2019.

The Academy continues to diversify and globalize its members with a group of 842 artists and executives from 59 countries being invited to join its exclusive ranks on Monday.

From actors Sterling K. Brown and Claire Foy to musicians Adele and Lady Gaga (who was invited to join multiple branches), this is the second biggest invite list we've ever seen – compared to 928 last year.

The Short Films and Feature Animation Branch invited the most number of people, at  108; the Documentary Branch was next with 98 artists on its list. See the full list by branch below.

Transparency and the sharing of statistics of its membership continues the trend started in 2016. The Academy shared the list in a specially created website.
The 2019 class is 50% women, 29% people of color, and represents 59 countries. Those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy’s membership in 2019.

Check out all of the invitation statistics provided by the Academy:

History

Last year's record of 928 continued a recent trend by The Academy, which has more than the doubled (and nearly tripled) the record set back in 2015.

The Academy only sends out invitations once per year. New members will be welcomed into the Academy at an invitation-only reception in the fall.
