What a night for fashion! It was full of beauty and surprises. Unlike my prediction, there were a lot of simple, elegant dresses that made the Best Dressed list. The Worst Dressed list consisted of drab colors, ill fits and poor designs. I was ecstatic to see a lot of fun fresh hair styles and accessories.
Before we get in to my lists, we must discuss two stand-out women who are worthy of mentioning. They dressed age appropriate and looked absolutely stunning: Best Actress winner Meryl Streep in her beautiful gold Alber Elbaz dress and Glenn Close in her emerald Zac Posen dress. Meryl's hair and makeup was just right. Her dress was stunning; the gold lamé really complemented the Oscar she won. Glenn Close looked amazing in her emerald dress/jacket combo; I loved the full body dress and slim fit. She looked so girly, a complete juxtaposition from her role in nominated “Albert Nobbs.”
Melissa Leo needs to take note from Ms. Streep and Ms. Close, because she just can't pull off the classy age appropriate look. What was she thinking in her sparkly outfit? Also worth mentioning, last year's Best Actress winner, Natalie Portman polka-dot strapless gown vintage Dior 1954 who definitely took a chance. She stood out. I can't put her on either list, because it just isn't list-worthy. However, I love the necklace and I love that she took a risk; however, I don't think it's Oscars appropriate — more for the Golden Globes or SAG Awards.
Now this year's 84th Academy Awards fashion list compiling was a challenge. There were many beautiful dresses from which to choose. I enjoyed the Red Carpet viewing and interviews. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy movies, but the fashion is my thing. So without further ado, here's my list:
Best Dressed
Honorable Mentions:
Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji
Spencer had a magical evening. Not only did she look amazing, definitely deserving of an Honorable Mention, but she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. She looked beautiful in her glam Tadashi Shoji dress. I loved the fit and style. She really pulled it off well. Congratulations to her.
Tina Fey in Carolina Herrera
Presenter Fey looked beautiful in her navy Carolina Herrera dress. I loved the puff. I wasn't sure how I felt about it at first, but I definitely think it's worth an Honorable Mention. Her hair and makeup was also beautiful. She looked amazing.
5. Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace
Showing off lots of leg, Jolie was rocking her Atelier Versace black dress. She looked amazing. It's not rare to find her wearing black or dark colors at an awards show; however, why mess with something so great? She looked so beautiful. I loved her hair. Her man could use a hair cut, but let's not take that away from how great she looked. The really popped with the slit up the side to show off some leg.
4. Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford
Presenter Paltrow stood out with the most simple dresses of the evening. However, she had an accent cape. She wore her beautiful white Tom Ford dress so well on the Red Carpet. She looked stunning. Hair and make up flawless. I loved it all.
3. Michelle Williams in Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton
Best Actress nominee Williams was looking adorable in her Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton bright salmon dress. It had a unique vintage look, which was appropriate for her “My Week with Marilyn” role. Not many people are able to pull of this type of dress, but Ms. Williams does it with class and grace. She looked fabulous with her pixie hair cut and simple makeup. Back to the dress, I loved the little embellishments and ruffles. I think she looked stunning.
2. Cameron Diaz in Gucci Premiere
Presenter Diaz looked absolutely stunning in her Gucci Premiere dress. The unique color complimented her skin tone. She was having fun and you could tell. I loved the glitter accents of the dress. I also absolutely loved her hair; it was fun and flirty; she totally pulled it off.
1. Sandra Bullock in Marchesa
Presenter and past Oscar winner Bullock tops my list this year with her beautifully unique black and white Marchesa piece. I loved the simple elegance of this outfit. It's something about how the black and white ties in together and then the added bling — I just loved it. Maybe I'm partial to how the classic black and white looks on the Red Carpet. Maybe it has something to do with how Julia Roberts pulled it off back in 2001, but Ms. Bullock did just that — she looked classic. Besides the jeweled detail, I love love love the back. Not to mention her hair and makeup looked great. She said she wanted to have a “sexy night” in her ABC interview and she did in fact, look very sexy.
Worst Dressed
5. Shailene Woodley in Valentino Couture
This is one of those dresses that could go either way, love it or hate it because it's vintage. However, I just don't love it. I'm not feeling the top. The white Valentino Couture dress didn't look good on Woodley in my opinion. It looked fine, but is that good enough for the Oscars? No.
4. Viola Davis in Vera Wang
I love that Davis was rocking her real hair on the Red Carpet. I also love the bold green color of the dress. However, I just don't like the dress. Her boobs look weird to me and the bottom is all messed up. There is a lot of potential in this outfit, but it didn't finish well. It's so frustrating. She's a beautiful woman, but it just didn't end well.
3. Kristen Wiig in J. Mendel
Wiig is beautiful. But girl, why the nude colors? I don't get it. I just don't get it. I need more from you. You deserved better. Jewel tones. Hey, I would even enjoy a black dress. Also, what's with all the tool? It's not okay. Please make it go away. You landed on my Worst Dressed list because you can do better. This dress is not OK.
2. Kate Mara in Jack Guisso Couture
Mara's couture dress was confused. The sleeve on the side … what was that? It looked like a bedazzled sling. The color was all wrong. Plus, she didn't look happy in any of her photos, so it makes me think she definitely broke/sprained her arm, which is why she needed the sleeve sling.
1. Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad
Seriously I don't understand what J.Lo was thinking with her Zuhair Murad dress. It was definitely a shock factor. Why else would they make a Twitter account for a certain part of her body? She was way over-exposed and it was way overdone. It was just too much. I predicted being bold; however, to be bold, you have to do it right. She did not succeed. I didn't like her hair; it was too tight. I feel like it was just all wrong. She's beautiful and could have chosen so many more beautiful options.
Heather’s take
Correspondent Heather Leszczewicz also has her best and worst dressed stars.
I am going to be completely honest: No one blew me away with their Oscar fashion, positively or negatively. I found myself thinking it's a standard red carpet. People still looked gorgeous and perfect, but I wanted everyone to pull out all the stops. No one really did. Perhaps the awards season was too long and everyone's fashion gurus were tapped out. Come on! It's the Academy Awards. I expect the most extravagant and spectacular red carpet not one that's ho hum.
Best Dressed
Giuliana Rancic |
Giuliana Rancic in Tony Ward Couture
Rancic may have only been shown on screen from the waist up during the E!'s Red Carpet show, but she looked fabulous. Much more fabulous than some of the other ladies actually walking the carpet.
3. Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen
The black dress with gold embroidery looked fab as did her hair. I approve.
2. Emma Stone in Giambattista Valli
I don't care that she broke some sort of rule where redheads can't wear red. And I don't care that Nicole Kidman wore a similar dress in the past. Emma looked great.
1. Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji
Perfect color, perfect shape, perfect accessories. The eventual winner had a beautiful Oscar look.
Worst Dressed
Dishonorable Mention:
Sacha Baron Cohen as the Dictator
Here's my thought, yes, he has to shill for his new movie, but why here, why at the Oscars? Sure it's a pretty big stage, but he's in an Oscar-nominated film! Can't he just walk the carpet with his beautiful wife and not pull anything?
3. Kate Mara in Jack Guisso Couture
OK, who thought it'd be a great idea to have a web of fabric attaching her arm to her boob? It's like it was a couture sling for her shoulder. The fabric kept her from moving her arm above her head. If that piece had been cut off, I could get behind the dress.
2. Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton
My eye stops at her waist where that little skirt juts out from the dress and then my eye drops to mid-thigh where the dress becomes long again. It's two dresses in one! Get rid of the tiny skirt and I would like the dress so much more. Tina Fey wore a similar dress, but I think it's the texture that I don't like on Michelle's version.
1. Kristen Wiig in J. Mendel
Ugh. For a bright and funny woman, Wiig seems to be afraid of color or standing out in the crowd. She needs to wear something other than nude. I hate the shape of the bottom of the dress, too.
Their dresses are all so fabulous! And their gold jewelries are really elegant. I used to sell gold jewelry for cash and sometimes I get an inspiration with their gold accessories.
