Original Scores from 114 eligible feature-length films, up from last year's 104 and 2011's 97, have made the cut to contend for the 86th Academy Awards, the Academy announced Thursday. Eligible scores include "12 Years A Slave," "The Book Thief" and "Gravity."
Original Scores from 114 eligible feature-length films, up from last year's 104 and 2011's 97, have made the cut to contend for the 86th Academy Awards, the Academy announced Thursday.
All members of the Music Branch will vote in the order of their preference for no more than five achievements. The five receiving the highest number of votes will become the nominations to vie for the Oscar — on Jan. 16.
To be eligible, "the original score must be a substantial body of music that serves as original dramatic underscoring, and must be written specifically for the motion picture by the submitting composer. Scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other preexisting music, diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs, or assembled from the music of more than one composer shall not be eligible," according to the Academy.
Among the contenders, some composers are featured more than once.
Christophe Beck has four eligible scores in the running this year, "The Hangover Part III," "The Internship," "R.I.P.D." and "Runner Runner." Even with the best numeric odds (3.5 percent), he most likely will not receive a nomination.
Hans Zimmer, nine-time Oscar nominee and Original Score winner for 1994's "The Lion King," has three scores eligible for the 86th Academy Awards. "Man of Steel," "Rush" and "12 Years A Slave" are the contenders. Hans Zimmer received a Golden Globe nomination for his "12 Years A Slave" score Thursday.
Other composers with three eligible entries are Ilan Eshkeri ("Austenland," "47 Ronin" and "The Invisible Woman"), Steve Jablonsky ("Ender's Game," "Gangster Squad" and "Pain & Gain"), Henry Jackman ("Captain Phillips," "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" and "Turbo") and Brian Tyler ("Iron Man 3," "Now You See Me" and "Thor: The Dark World").
Perennial favorite John Williams only has one film composition in contention for 2013: "The Book Thief." The Academy could show love to him this year, giving him a 49th nomination. He is the second-most nominated person, behind Walt Disney's record 59 nominations. Williams has five Oscars, his first dating back to 1971's "Fiddler on the Roof" and most recent being for 1993 Best Picture winner "Schindler's List."
Alexandre Desplat, eligible for his "Philomena" score, has been nominated in the Original Score category five of the last seven years. His score for 2012's Best Picture winner, "Argo," lost to Mychael Danna's enchanting score for "Life of Pi."
Other Golden Globe nominees are also eligible including Williams' score for "The Book Thief," Alex Ebert's score for "All Is Lost," Alex Heffes for "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" and Steven Price gripping score for "Gravity."
